Don't Buy It - Universal Phone Mount Critique

By Riley Diaz

It fits my 2009 Toyota Highlander. The cons listed above are minor.

I take the mega grip off and slip it on the vent mount in my car. The vent mount is okay, I'm not a big fan of them but it gets the basic job done.

Unfortunately the vent mount fits very loosely and moves back and forth when taking a turn. I'm unable to install it onto the vents closest to the driver because it interferes with the wiper control and the headlight/blinker control. I have not tried the windshield mount. I can even keep the rubber case on the Droid and use the holder.

If you care about the electronics you place in this mount, don't turn the heat on when using the vent mount. The holding piece works perfectly. It won't mount at all in some cars I've tried at all due to vent design, and all others pretty much have the same issue. Also, the vent pretty much has to point straight out at you, if it's pointed up too much it's no good. However, the design is not very sturdy on the vent mount. I actually had the phone fall down on the floor board because I made a turn and the whole vent mount went down. I am ordering a 2nd one for my other car. It is cheap and works well connected to the vent. The windshield mount, however works very well and holds firmly. If I had to do over, I'd still get this, but I wouldn't bother with the vent mount.

That thing is very feeble and doesn't hold the device well at all. It seems to fit my Odyssey vent easily though unlike many people's experiences where it won't mount on the vents at all.

In both of my vehicles (Taurus and Siena), the clips really don't hold all that well allowing the whole mount to move with the additional weight of the Droid. Further, trying to use the phone requires holding it steady first. It holds my iPhone 3 and my son's iPhone 4 with no problem. It's adjustable with easy release.

It's a simple design, easy to assemble, and easy to mount. It holds the mobile phone in just the right spot for driving.

I will update my review as the weeks go by to see how it holds up, but so far so good. It actually makes driving a little bit more enjoyable.
