Teens Are Using Cell Phones More And More

By Stance Jackson

Cell phones are very different now than what they were just 3 to 5 years ago. They have become mp3 players, cameras, and even GPS devices as well as their primary use of being a telephone. These phones have mostly been targeted towards adults but now manufacturers are realizing that there is a huge market available for phones for kids as well.

Cell phone manufacturers hope older teens think the phones are cool and they hope the parents want their kids to have them for the safety factor. Children have always been a big consumer of cereal and now the phone companies realize that kids can be big cell phone consumers as well.

Older teens want cell phones that have all the features adult phones might have. This includes cameras, games, and even Internet access. Smaller children, however, dont need phones that are that sophisticated and they just need a phone that will do the basics: call out and receive calls. Parents of younger children may want their kids to have a phone for safety purposes and a basic phone works just fine.

Unlike phones for adults, there are not that many choices for real young children yet. The best kids cell phones for kids all have a couple of common features and then some cool designs so that the kids like them. Kids cell phones all have preprogrammed keys where the parents can input all the important numbers kids would have to call if they got in trouble.

Most of the cell phones for younger children come with prepaid minutes plans that are a must for someone so young. Many parents want their kids to have cell phones so that they will be safer but they dont want to give them access to something they can abuse. At what age a child should be given a cell phone is up to debate and has to be individually decided by each set of parents as there is no correct answer.
