Ground Breaking New Energy For AT&T

By Bonni Hobbs

July 2011- AT&T stepped up to be the first telecommunications company to sign on with Bloom Energy for new electric power. The two companies signed an agreement today that eleven new technology electric generators will be built in sites across California

NASA has been doing research on how to generate electricity on other planets and this new technology was formed. Bloom servers are based on solid oxide fuel cells. This invention takes advantage of its ability to only allowing oxygen to past its filter in one direction. It requires oxygen rich air on one side of the filter and a standard fuel such as natural gas to be on the other side of the fuel cell. The chemicle reaction across the filter produces electricity day and night. The companies expect these Bloom Servers to deliver over 7 Mw of sparkling clean power with less then 50% harmful emission spilling into the environment than standar power plants.

"AT&T is dedicated to applying alternative power to our business operations as part of our on going commitment to reduce our pollution emmisions and improvement to the environment as a whole by increasing our alternative energy portfolio. Bloom Energy provided us with a solution that was not only cost comparable but additionally allows us to minimize environmental impact," said John Schinter, the spokes person from AT&T.

When all eleven new Bloom Energy Servers are in full operation, the electricity anticipated to be produced is over 62 million kilowatt hours (kwh). This is more than the electricity needed for 5,500 standard homes in the United States. The new servers will also be in cities like Corona, Fontana, Hayword, Pasedena, and other cities in California.

"Bloom Energy is excited to be working with AT&T in assisting to achieve their corporate sustainability goals," said Bill Thayer, from Bloom Energy. "With a shared vision of reliability, environmental stewardship, and innovation, Bloom Energy and AT&T's collaborative efforts are certain to make an impact in their facilities in California."

The major advantage to the environment is the amount of reduction in CO2 emmission by this program is said to be over 240 million pounds. This is equivalent to the reduction felt by removing 3500 cars from the streets of America

AT&T's commitment made in 2010 is to provide over 3 million kwh annually via alternative energy production in the year 2011. In addition they have 19 other plans to implement after this one is completed.
