Everything You Need To Know To Find The Best Mobile Broadband Deals

By James Nettleton

Searching out the best mobile broadband deals can often seem like a complicated task, with all the technical jargon and numerous things to take into consideration. With just a little research, however, you'll feel much more confident about finding the right deal.

A major concern is the coverage area of each of the mobile broadband network providers. You'll usually find that mobile broadband is accessible anywhere you can get a mobile phone signal, but the performance will vary and true broadband speeds are only available in certain areas. As you'd imagine, cities are well covered and rural areas less so.

Most mobile broadband providers have coverage checkers that allow you to test their signal in your area. As companies are rapidly upgrading coverage areas, this factor may not be so important in the future, but it is still worth checking before you start your search for the best mobile broadband deals.

Using your connection on the move seems like an obvious benefit of mobile broadband but it may not be as simple as you might hope. The quality of your mobile broadband service when travelling is very dependant on your provider's network coverage and the technical issues arising from moving between coverage areas.

The best way to find out which networks perform the best in these situations is to find reviews on mobile broadband review sites and blogs.

Using your service abroad can be very expensive. If you're intending to do this, make sure you've checked out the pricing for it and made sure that the provider you go with offers overseas usage.

When deciding on the best mobile broadband deals for your needs, you'll first need to consider the different types of pricing structure: Pay As You Go Mobile Broadband (which is known as PAYG) and Contract Mobile Broadband.

The Pay As You Go option works in very much the same way as it does for mobile phones. You buy a USB dongle (the miniature modem which you plug into the side of your laptop) and top it up with credit depending on how much you intend to use. Just as with mobile phones, you can top up at any time and add more credit to your dongle. The credit is used up as you download, browse, send emails, or use you connection in any way and when your credit is gone, the connection will simply stop working until you top-up again.

Contract Mobile Broadband, not surprisingly, involves entering contracts for a specific time period, usually between one to two years, with data usage allotted per month, usually between 1Gb and 15Gb. If you exceed your limit, the service does not stop as with PAYG but instead you pay for additional data at a specified rate. Providers allow you to monitor your data usage so you know when you are about to exhaust your monthly allowance and will start incurring extra charges.

As well as giving you cheaper usage rates for regular use, all but the cheapest contract deals will supply you with a free dongle, or even a laptop! When you're comparing the best mobile broadband deals, you should take this into account.

In fact, you should analyze the price of the free laptops offered, and compare different laptops by reading the appropriate reviews to see just which one of these freebies provides the best value.

There are only a handful of providers of mobile broadband in the UK, and these are pretty much the same networks that provide mobile phone coverage: T-Mobile, O2, Virgin Mobile, 3 Mobile, Orange, Vodafone and now also BT. Your next task is to find the best mobile broadband deals offered by each of these providers and compare them using the knowledge you now have about the mobile broadband system.

Finding the best mobile broadband deals involves a little work but it's well worth it to ensure that you find one that suits your requirements.
