IPTV - 10 Reasons To Love It!

By Jason Smythe

Is IPTV technology the way to go or is it just plain old hype?

Here are 10 important facts and advantages about IPTV. Hopefully this information can help you decide whether or not you are ready for the IPTV revolution.

1. IPTV ( Internet protocol television ), is the 'new kid on the block' technology for transporting data information and Audio and Video (AV), across an IP based digital network. This could include LAN, internet, Ethernet or WAN. The addition of a set top box (STB) allows AV sources to be streamed across existing networks to TVs or PCs. IPTV can be one to many (Multicast) or one to one (Unicast).

2. According to recent research findings, at present 15.5 million people subscribe to IPTV services, 8.4 million of these subscribers are from Europe.

3. IPTV systems avoid interruption of critical networks by utilising a separate video LAN.

4. Due to the high bandwidth requirements of digital video IPTV requires broadband Internet connectivity. In theory, connecting to this high speed Internet would allow IPTV users far more control over their television programming and the ability to customize it to their individual preferences.

5. Free-view channels are delivered without the need for SAT or Terrestrial receivers.

6. Films, sport and local content can be added for all important additional revenue in hotels, or offered as a free service to a students.

7. It is predicted that there will be around 12.7 million IPTV users in the US by 2012, compared to the current 3.3 million subscribers,

8. AV sources can be streamed across existing networks to PCs or TVs with the addition of set top boxes (STB).

9. Problems that are common in analogue systems such as noise, ghosting, harmonics, reflections, cross modulation etc, are practically invisible in IPTV based networks.

10. IPTV systems have excellent storage facility and allow all programs to be later retrieved and viewed from the IPTV network.

A Novel Use of IPTV Technology

A classic example of how IPTV technology is being used in an increasingly ingenious number of ways, is with a luxurious, IP enabled bathroom television. These televisions are the ultimate in bathroom luxury, allowing the viewer safely to watch TV whilst soaking in a bath full of bubbles, or even taking a shower.

These water resistant televisions offer a user friendly solution to the hotels worldwide who are installing digital IPTV networks across their properties. It will no longer be necessary to hide STB's in the void behind the shower or bathroom wall and run a separate IR receiver, but instead deliver TV, Radio, VOD and other services by simply feeding an Ethernet cable into the rear of the screen.

How about that for technology put to great use!

Concerned Parents can Locate Children With GPS Child Locator Gadget

By Paul G. Wolf

Every now and again we hear stories on the news and in the newspapers about children that have gone missing. Fortunatly, most children turn up safe again, but some dont and there is nothing sadder than a parent who experiences the loss of their child like this. The good news is that you don't have to endure something like this because there are ways to avoid lost kids with todays technology. I'm talking about a GPS child locator.

Kids GPS gadgets at present are tiny devices and they are build into watches, cell phones, backpacks; even located directly in the kids clothing.

The child locator will then send out a signal allowing you to track the location of the kids at all times. You can encode the GPS device to send signals at intervals as short as 10 seconds for close to real time tracking of your children.

GPS technology works fantastic for tracking kids that are at high risk due to child custody issues or similar problems. It is possible to set the widget up so that it will alert you not only to your child's location, but also if the child leaves a predesignated area or boundary. So you can know if the kid leaves their school or the neighborhood playground or pool. Visualize the peace of mind you'll have when you know that you can simply log into your computer and instantly know where your kid is thanks to the child tracker widget.

Some GPS widgets also has a panic button, which the child can use in case of an emergency. The alerts go not only to you, but also to the tracking service so the authorities can be notified fast.

Regularly when kids are kidnapped the kidnapper will immediately get rid of any cell phone the child may be carrying to prevent being tracked. With a small unseen GPS tracking widget attached to your child's clothing you'll still be able to track them and locate them quickly. You and more importantly the police will know exactly where to locate your kid and this increases the chances they will be found unharmed dramatically.

GPS gadgets for small kids can be as tiny as a watch or pager and they use rechargeable batteries that last up to 24 hours. If you want something with an extended battery life you can get larger GPS tracking units that can transmit for up to 2 weeks on a single charge. Older kids like teens can have the GPS units placed in their car to keep track of their locations and driving habits.

Some auto GPS units can be programmed to send an alert when the car exceeds a certain speed limit.

While personal GPS units are not cheap you really can't put a price on the peace of mind you'll get knowing you can locate your child in case of some emergency. When the safety of the kid is at risk nothing is too expensive. In addition to the cost of the GPS device itself you'll also need to pay a tracking service which will run anywhere from $25-100 a month depending on the service and features. Buying a GPS device for tracking the child can be a great way to give yourself peace of mind.

Are Computer Rentals A Viable Option For Businesses?

By Amy Nutt

There are many instances in which it may be a wise choice to consider renting computers rather than buying it for your business. There are times when a short term project requires the use of more computers, in which case rental suits that need to a tee. But, there are many other reasons that renting may be more economical than buying for business.

New Business: It is risky to start a new business without even considering purchasing one or more computers. Renting allows you to have the equipment you need while you build up a customer base and a source of business income. This cuts down dramatically on the amount of capital needed to start a new business. Renting makes more sense for someone just starting out with a new business.

Extra Project: There are times when extra help is needed for short term or long term projects. Project based purchases can be an unnecessary expense. Why buy extra computers if they are only needed for certain projects? In the long run, renting is more practical than purchasing more computers.

Preserving credit lines: There is no need to push your bank's line of credit in order to obtain computers for your company. You can keep your credit line in tact while still getting the newer equipment you need.

No repair bills: When you rent computer equipment you never have to worry about a repair bill. If something goes wrong with the computer equipment, you are covered.

Latest technology: Renting ensures that your company will have the latest computer software and technology available.

Tax Perks: Renting computer equipment may qualify your business for tax deductions. Check with your tax consultant but renting is a viable business expense in most cases. Any expense that is related to your business is a potential deduction.

Whether you need computer equipment short term or long term, there are many benefits to renting. Consider the options carefully before you decide. Buying new computer equipment often sets a business back financially when the goal is for the business to make a profit. Renting allows you to budget the expense rather than have a large lump sum needed right away. Buying office equipment is often more expensive and risky to the business than renting. It is best to begin by renting in any case so you will have set payments, covered repair, and less risk financially.

Many businesses are discovering just how much better renting computer equipment is. Both small and large business can benefit from renting rather than purchasing computers and computer equipment. This may be the best option for you and your business. Before laying out huge sums of cash for computer equipment, investigate the many advantages to renting.

GPS Loggers! Enhance Your Hiking Trip With A GPS Tracking Device.

By Eskka Carnes

Devices that log into position on a regular basis are called GPS data loggers, or can be called GPS loggers. They store this data into their memory internally, and this data can be put onto computer from this device as well. Often those involved in sports use these devices to keep track of the miles that they cover over time. Usually these GPS loggers are quite small and you can wear them on an armband or can put them in a pocket. Many hardware and gadget stores have these GPS data loggers, and you can even find them on the web.

Understanding GPS Not sure what GPS is? Well, GPS stands for Global Position System. This is a type of navigation system used on a global basis, known as GNSS. The Department of Defense in the US actually developed it. Today any one can use it and it is used for tracking and navigation.

GPS devices can help to find or track a position that is exact. It uses radiowave signals to do this, which are emitted by satellites that are orbiting the earth. Not only can location be determined with GPS devices but time and velocity can also be found with these devices as well.

Uses for GPS Loggers GPS loggers can be used for a variety of different things. Many people use them for traveling and some use them for sports. Of course there are other uses too. You'll find that these GPS data loggers are often used for asset tracking, sports, security, and even geotagging.

Sports There are several sports related applications for GPS loggers. The devices are, however, mainly used for outdoor sports such as jogging, hiking, biking, etc. You can take the small gadget with you and later on download the data to your computer to determine where you've been or how fast you were going. This system is also used in the sport of gliding where competitors are made to fly close circuit routes. When they land, the data stored in the GPS loggers will help determine if they followed the path and who did it the fastest.

In Geotagging GPS loggers can be used for geotagging as well, cross-referencing data with data that is used with pictures that are taken by a digital camera. If you take your GPS logger along with you when you are snapping photos, you can figure out the exact location of the photograph that was taken, but the time and date of the picture that is recorded by the camera must be correct.

Uses in Security and Asset Tracking Asset tracking often depends on these GPS loggers as well. Pet owners often put them on pets so they know where their pets are at all times. Even parents sometimes use these devices on their kids. They can be put on the child or the car of a child so it is always known where they are. In some private investigations they are used, and any security activity that requires tracking an asset will use them as well.

The Cost You can purchase these GPS loggers in many stores that carry gadgets. Of course you can make an order for this device on the Internet as well. Usually you'll pay anywhere from $25-200 for a good device. Of course some will cost more than other devices. The price you pay will depend on the data storage, how it is downloaded, and the amount of memory space that the gadget has.

Don't Sign Up For No Credit Check Cellular Phone Services Until You Read This

By Chris J. Floyd

With the advent of no credit check wireless, several advantages are offered to those who have less than perfect credit rating. This lack of credit rating can be due to any number of reasons such as past credit problems, being too young or being a new comer who does not qualify for credit due to income or other criteria the credit companies use.

When someone signs a contract for cellular phone services, there are certain requirements that a customer must agree to. For example, the customer must stay with the company in question for a period of one to two years. If this contract is broken or ended early, there is usually a substantial penalty that is due to the company should you end your contract before that set time period has expired.

To ensure that a consumer can meet monetary obligations, many providers of cellular phone services require a mandatory credit check to see that past payment history is very good. Often, the cellular phone services company will require that the customer can provide a credit card that the monthly cost can be drawn from to ensure that the company receive their payment regularly. If a person doesn't have a credit card or good enough credit history, then that person will more than likely be denied a cell phone. With a no credit check wireless cell phone there is no long term time period that you have to purchase service for. Instead, air time minutes are purchased for approximately 60 to 90 days, or up until they are consumed, whichever comes first.

Many no credit check cellular phone services rent time from the big carriers like AT&T, so even if you get a prepaid or no credit check cell phone, you will get service that has as extensive a coverage area as the big carriers. Like the phones covered under the set-period plans, you can use the phones for long distance calls, and the cost to make them has decreased in price as nationwide coverage has decreased in price.

Although the phones used on a no credit check basis are somewhat more limited in function than those offered on other types of plans, there are a few advantages to getting one of these phones. For one thing, many of these entry level phones can be purchased for under $20, making them perfect for older folks and children. They have fewer features and are far easier to use for members of these age groups.

In the event that you've lost your phone, you don't need to worry as much, due to its low value. Also, if the unit is lost or stolen, you don't have to worry about the problem of someone running up a huge phone bill that you might find yourself liable for. Instead, the phones have a set number of airtime minutes that once gone render the phone unusable. This choice is also a good way to limit the phone's use to strictly an emergency basis for a child or teen. In order to keep the phone active, all that needs to be done is purchase around 30 minutes of airtime every 60 or 90 days, otherwise you can just use up the minutes and allow the service to expire. You can easily get service again at a later time with no penalties for early termination.

Text Messaging And Instant Messaging Made Simple

By Charles Moore

Smartphones these days can do almost anything. One can bet that a state of the art phone is going to cost a pretty penny. For those with limited funds they might have trouble finding a passable phone. But the Samsung SGH-A177 has just been released. Its an affordable phone with an amazing full QWERTY keyboard allowing for easy messaging.

The Samsung SGH-A177 is one of the simplest phones to be released in the past couple of months. Most phones are either a flip phone or a slider. The Samsung SGH-A177 is neither it is a simple rectangular phone. Many tech junkies might be put off by this while others might embrace the simplicity in its design. Unfortunately the phone was made almost too simple. The plastic shell around the phone doesn't feel very strong. Anyone who is prone to dropping phones should be careful, or at least purchase a rubber skin case along with this phone. Also the screen on this phone is very small. Photos and games wont look as good as what we are obviously used to. If you don't plan on taking much pictures than the screens display is negligible. One of the best features on this phone is its full QWERTY keyboard which was obviously designed for comfort. They keys are slightly raised which is a very big plus as most phone users cant stand flush keys. Also the keys make an audible click noise when you press them while typing. This phone was obviously designed with text junkies in mind.

This phone clearly lacks any of the features found on many of the heavy weight phones out there. The phone does come with a camera, instant message capabilities, and even Bluetooth. For some people this is all that they might need. The IM function and Bluetooth work well but the images captured on the camera are mediocre at best. Along with not being able to record any video the camera seems like an afterthought.

The microphone installed in the phone needs definite improvement. If you are in a high traffic or loud noise area the microphone will pick it up and the caller on the other end will have trouble understanding you. Additionally the speakerphone is just atrocious. The other caller will sound very low and if the volume is increased to over compensate the caller will sound very distorted and garbled.

If you are looking for a good messaging phone without any features then you should pick up the Samsung SGH-A177. For anyone who racks up their text bill the full QWERTY keyboard will be highly enjoyed. Just be wary of the phones mediocre call performance.

Business Private Email Network: Is it Possible?

By Amy Nutt

When you know the possible corruption and infiltration in an email system, you may wonder if it is possible to have a business private email network. The fact is, it is possible, and in fact, it is absolutely necessary.

For those who are concerned about internet and email security, there is reason for worry. With some persistence, it is possible for anyone to break into private emails, especially at open wi-fi spots, and read, and even potentially change, the contents of an email.

The hijacker can impersonate the true author, or the thief can simply retrieve the proprietary information from the email and send it on, unaltered, to its final destination with no indication that the message has been stolen.

There are other concerns for businesses and email security services, particularly those businesses that are in the health care industry. These businesses are required to comply with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), and there are provisions in the act that not only require them to provide medical information to the patient through electronic means, but also a requirement that they keep that information secure and unavailable to anyone else who may have an interest in the info.

This presents a huge problem for some businesses, who may be stymied by how to provide the access to electronically maintained records using an electronic signature system as required by HIPAA, but still keeping the information completely secure, also required by law.

For all companies, it's important to choose a secure email client that will protect the information in each email message as it is sent. The best idea is to use an open architecture system that will be supported well into the future, rather than relying on a proprietary system that may not last more than a few years.

While companies with the means to do so can maintain a strict email security system within the IT department, for thousands of mid-size to small companies, such a solution is difficult.

Many companies are unable to afford the overhead in IT, software and tech support such a system.

Many, then, are turning to turnkey systems that are able to make secure email easy and affordable. They encrypt each email message in a way that makes it unreadable to any recipient that does not have a key to interpret the the messages.

There are systems that can provide for encrypted emails by the hundreds are thousands as necessary, with thousands of secure email certificates. There is one secure certificate for each employee and each email address that is in the company.

The best systems have an easy to manage program that can administer all of the digital certificates used in an organization and release them as needed.

Using an 'out of the box' email security solution saves hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars for a business, and still provides them with an outstanding level of email security to protect themselves and their clients. This can provide trust and peace of mind for businesses and the clients who converse with those businesses.

Cell Phone Accessories: The Best Way To Enjoy A Phone.

By Martin W. Hagerty

In this day and age of limitless expansions technology is continuing to increase the functionality of phones. There are many different ways a person can enjoy his or her phone The best way to enjoy all that a phone has to offer is by using accessories. Cell phone accessories offer amazing features any person would not want to be without.

Bluetooth accessories are one of the best ways to experience the full potential of a phone. Bluetooth offers a wide variety of wireless accessories which will surely please tech junkies and casual consumers alike. One of the more common accessories offered by Bluetooth is the wireless headset. These headsets allow people to talk on their phones hands free. The headsets are popular among people who drive, workers who use their hands, and business people. Business people also are able to transfer all their contact information and schedule from their computers to their cell phones. Only computers with Bluetooth enabled are able to make such a transfer. There are many Bluetooth accessories available to the casual phone user, such as the wireless headphones and wireless stereo. Both devices allow people to wireless listen to music and as long as their cell phones are within range the music will play flawlessly over the system.

A good accessory to protect your phone is the rubber skin case. The cases are effective because the rubber is very strong and durable. It encases your phone in tight rubber which guards it from damage. The rubber skin cases are great at protecting your phone from receiving nicks and dings from accidental droppings. With the new sleek design of all modern phones many users might feel that their phones are too smooth to grasp comfortably. With a phone inside a rubber skin case it is easier to grasp and the chance of accidentally dropping it greatly decreases.

If your phone utilizes changeable housing you are able to completely alter the look of your phone. Cell phone housings can come in a variety of funky designs allowing you to express yourself on your phones appearance. Many websites even offer services that allow you to design your own phone housing. You can put whatever you want, creating a completely unique look. Interchangeable housing parts for phones are very popular. Many cell phones come in a very dreary set of colors, many people find the funky colors of different housings a welcome accessory.

Many people believe that cell phone accessories are useless because a cell phone is just for making phone calls. But with cell phones being made with new features the accessories that are made available are equally useful and exciting to use.

Does Your Business Have a Secure Communication System?

By Amy Nutt

Sending an email seems to be a safe and direct activity - you send a message to a specific person at a specific address, and that person receives and opens the message. However, email is not private communication. It is susceptible to all kinds of hacking and snooping, sometimes by your own coworkers, but mostly by others outside of the company.

While email theft happens rarely, it is more common when there is important information being relayed. In other words, very few people want to eavesdrop about Aunt Matilda's bunion removal - not of interest, like most of the email transactions that go back and forth every day.

However, there is a chance that a business that allows proprietary information to be sent through a regular, unsecure email system will have people spying on them and intercepting messages.

The most people most likely to have a problem are those who are relaying sensitive information about people, industries, politics, business practices or investigations. There is not only a chance, but a high chance that these people have information that is of interest to people outside of the small circle that is receiving the email2.

This information may even be of enough interest to motivate someone to make the significant effort required to break into a system.

It is particularly important to focus on the costs of email being intercepted. Even if someone were to intercept the email about Aunt Matilda's bunions, the damage that could be done with such information is limited. However, if the information being sent through your emails is potential more inflammatory or damaging, you may want to consider other solutions.

Businesses in particular are concerned about the privacy of their internal communications, and many businesses are concerned about the privacy of their clients and patients.

One serious concern for those businesses in the health care industry is that the HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) requires that electronic exchanges regarding patient information is encrypted and safely sent.

This presents several difficulties, including the fact that encryptions that use 'keys' are particularly difficult to use when you are dealing with many thousands of patients on thousands of different PCs.

Health plans must also maintain and transmit data electronically and allow clients to use electronic signatures, etc., but must also protect their information.

For these companies who recognize that as soon as a 'send' button is clicked, the security of the message is lost, a secure company email security solution is a must.

Experts in all industries recommend finding a value oreiented provider, one that will bring peace of mind. Find a provider that specializes in email security, not a third party provider which does not know how to preserve privacy.

Look for a secure email solution that will protect each message's integrity. Find one that uses and open - architecture solution rather than a proprietary system, since the open architecture systems can stay around for longer periods of tiem, and you are likely to be able to find support for them for many years.

The Basics of Wireless Network Installation

By A Nutt

The appeals of Wireless network installation are numerous. The first, of course, is a limit to the number of wires running through a home or office. A wireless network also allows for a very simple installation, since your knowledge of wiring and electrical work can be minimal, but still be adequate for installing a wireless network.

Additionally, the wireless configuration allows you to have a great deal of flexibility in how you locate equipment around the home or office.

In order to set up a wireless network that is internet ready, you will need only two primary components.

The first is wireless LAN (or Local Area Network) cards. It's important that each PC on the network have its own wireless card.

They need to be inserted into an unused PCI slot located inside of a PC. The antenna portion of the card should be at the back of the PC with the antenna extending up.

Installing the LAN card is not a complicated operation, and can be accomplished by a novice in computer installation. Simply open the computer case carefully and find the slot where the LAN card fits. There is likely only one available, but any computer that does not have a built in wireless system will have a LAN slot.

Ground yourself by touching something metal or plastic to dispel static, then screw the card into the slot with the screws provided. Make the electrical connections, replace the PC covers, then start up the computer. You'll need to intall drivers specifically for that LAN card. Repeat for each computer that will be on the network.

The second component of a basic wireless network is the wireless router. These routers allow you to share a single internet connection between numerous computers. Depending on the router's specifications, they can accommodate between four and sixteen computers on a single wireless router.

If you have internet from your cable provider, they may have supplied a cable modem, but those are rarely wireless. You'll need to plug a wireless router into the modem, then route your PCs through it. If you have a DSL or ADSL connection, purchase a DSL modem.

You'll then configure your network. Log onto your router/modem through your PC. Read the owner's manual for the router for specific directions. You'll want to direct it to automatically assign IP addresses to any PC attached to it. It's recommended that you stick to basic network configurations and use the 192.168.01 as the first IP address and the 0.9 as the ending address, which gives you the potential for eight additional devices to be installed, if you like.

You want your router to be the primary gateway and also the primary DNS, so both of these boxes should be set to the router IP (182.168.0.1). Other boxes should be blank or contain default indicators.

The next step is to go to the Network Connections screen in a PC start menu, right click on wireless network and go through properties to indicate that you want the router to obtain an IP address automatically.

Everything You Need To Know To Find The Best Mobile Broadband Deals

By James Nettleton

Searching out the best mobile broadband deals can often seem like a complicated task, with all the technical jargon and numerous things to take into consideration. With just a little research, however, you'll feel much more confident about finding the right deal.

A major concern is the coverage area of each of the mobile broadband network providers. You'll usually find that mobile broadband is accessible anywhere you can get a mobile phone signal, but the performance will vary and true broadband speeds are only available in certain areas. As you'd imagine, cities are well covered and rural areas less so.

Most mobile broadband providers have coverage checkers that allow you to test their signal in your area. As companies are rapidly upgrading coverage areas, this factor may not be so important in the future, but it is still worth checking before you start your search for the best mobile broadband deals.

Using your connection on the move seems like an obvious benefit of mobile broadband but it may not be as simple as you might hope. The quality of your mobile broadband service when travelling is very dependant on your provider's network coverage and the technical issues arising from moving between coverage areas.

The best way to find out which networks perform the best in these situations is to find reviews on mobile broadband review sites and blogs.

Using your service abroad can be very expensive. If you're intending to do this, make sure you've checked out the pricing for it and made sure that the provider you go with offers overseas usage.

When deciding on the best mobile broadband deals for your needs, you'll first need to consider the different types of pricing structure: Pay As You Go Mobile Broadband (which is known as PAYG) and Contract Mobile Broadband.

The Pay As You Go option works in very much the same way as it does for mobile phones. You buy a USB dongle (the miniature modem which you plug into the side of your laptop) and top it up with credit depending on how much you intend to use. Just as with mobile phones, you can top up at any time and add more credit to your dongle. The credit is used up as you download, browse, send emails, or use you connection in any way and when your credit is gone, the connection will simply stop working until you top-up again.

Contract Mobile Broadband, not surprisingly, involves entering contracts for a specific time period, usually between one to two years, with data usage allotted per month, usually between 1Gb and 15Gb. If you exceed your limit, the service does not stop as with PAYG but instead you pay for additional data at a specified rate. Providers allow you to monitor your data usage so you know when you are about to exhaust your monthly allowance and will start incurring extra charges.

As well as giving you cheaper usage rates for regular use, all but the cheapest contract deals will supply you with a free dongle, or even a laptop! When you're comparing the best mobile broadband deals, you should take this into account.

In fact, you should analyze the price of the free laptops offered, and compare different laptops by reading the appropriate reviews to see just which one of these freebies provides the best value.

There are only a handful of providers of mobile broadband in the UK, and these are pretty much the same networks that provide mobile phone coverage: T-Mobile, O2, Virgin Mobile, 3 Mobile, Orange, Vodafone and now also BT. Your next task is to find the best mobile broadband deals offered by each of these providers and compare them using the knowledge you now have about the mobile broadband system.

Finding the best mobile broadband deals involves a little work but it's well worth it to ensure that you find one that suits your requirements.

Is It The End For Stand Alone GPS Devices?

By Abu Duha

Take a minute and remember the last twenty years of your life. Technology has literally transformed the way we live so much, that most of the things available are or will become a necessity. A good example of this is a GPS system that you find in your mobile phone. Most of these tiny little pieces are situated inside the SIM card and can keep track of your location. It's an amazing feat, when not too long ago cell phones looked like huge walkie-talkies.

GPS is offered on most of the newest Sim free mobile phones as long as you have access to a 3G network, but is it as good as a stand alone GPS unit like the hand held Garmin units or the ones built into cars? The simple answer is not yet. Cell phones try to be a lot of things all at once: camera, keyboard, MP3 player, video game console, GPS unit, oh yeah - and a telephone. The result is they are not the best at any of these things compared to a stand alone unit.

If you want to take another angle and actually compare the phones to stand alone products, there is one major downfall to GPS tracking on a cell phone. Any time we drive and need help finding a location, we have to focus on the small mobile phone screen. This can create havoc on the road and even cause accidents. In fact, stand alone products use this to promote safety with their own creations.

So the stand alone unit is better for the car. But then again, when you park the car, you take the pink mobile phones with you while you are not likely to lug both the phone and the GPS, unless you have a lot of pockets. And cargo pants are just not in this year.

Even with all the debate that surrounds which one to choose, both industries are growing like crazy. While this may be true, you don't find too many people who buy one of each. Instead they feel that since they have an option with their mobile phone, a stand alone is not necessary, even if it's not as good. This is because mobile phones don't charge anything extra for GPS tracking.

Even market analysts agree that GPS units will grow for 3-5 more years thanks to lowered prices. However, once this period is over the stand alones will all but disappear as people upgrade their smart phones. Once cell phones are able to compete with GPS systems on a quality standpoint (especially voice options), people will cease to buy the stand alone versions. Even all the negativities that surround a mobile phones screen size will be combated with multi-functionality and portability.

The hand held GPS will inevitably go the way of the PDA, which was replaced by the cell phone as soon as smart phones, like the Blackberry, started coming equipped with decent keyboards and useful software.

GPS Systems

By Colin Samuels

Getting a quality GPS system has become something that almost all motorists want for their cars. If you get your hands on a great GPS system to install into your car, you are going to be able to see some great results. You will not have to print off a novels worth of directions from your computer, and spending days messing around with bulky maps will be a thing of the past. A GPS system will also help you avoid any kind of traffic obstruction that could hinder you from getting to where you need to go. Being able to avoid things like traffic jams will greatly reduce stress during your travel time, and what motorist will not be able to appreciate that? Having an exceptional GPS system can be just as important to travel as having an excellent sound system in their car. There are countless consumers that are dying to know just how these systems work. Are they really worth spending the money to put in your car?

The basic functioning of a GPS device is to pinpoint a person in an exact spot on the globe. What consumers purchase is technically a Global Positioning System receiver, not a GPS per say. The GPS, the real GPS, is a constellation of more than two dozen satellites the United States military installed in an earth orbit. These satellites orbit the earth twice a day. The GPS receivers consumers can buy are able to locate at least four satellites at any given time and determine the distance to each. This process results in the GPS receiver being able to pinpoint its own location on the globe.

While GPS receivers are able to operate under a wide variety of different circumstances, they are not always completely perfect. For example, a GPS can be very accurate during most all weather situations and no matter what time of the day it happens to be. Unfortunately GPS can be blocked by things like thick forests and other dense obstacles.

Signals that are sent to a GPS are technically free to get, but it is through the paid services that motorists are able to successfully navigate from place to place. Thanks to the great computerized backing systems that GPS have, you will be able to access many great extras to make your travel even more easy than it has ever been. The features that you receive with a paid service will include road map functioning, allowing you to download information that assists in walking your way right through to your travel destination. There are many systems that can help a driver go from point-to-point, while giving turn-by-turn instructions along the way.

Road map functioning " A GPS receiver can be used in conjunction with downloadable road maps to walk a motorist through a trip. Some devices will even determine the best route to take a driver from Point A to Point B and give turn-by-turn verbal directions along the way.

Real-time traffic updates " Some services enable motorists to receive real-time traffic updates as they travel along a route. Intuitive services will help motorists avoid jams ahead and provide them alternative routes to take to avoid problems.

Trip planning " When the GPS system is backed by a computerized service, motorists can receive invaluable information for trip planning. Not only will a GPS system in a car determine the best route for a motorist to take, but it can also calculate travel time, distance and other important factors.

So now you know that a good GPS system is going to be able to assist you in knowing exactly where you are -- at all times -- while you are driving.

When you go ahead and supercharge your GPS, you are really going to be able to travel with ease.

Magellan Roadmate

By Alexis Kenne

In the 16th century, Ferdinand Magellan was the first known explorer to circumnavigate the earth, a feat he accomplished under the rule of the Spanish crown. Since then, his name has been associated far and wide with navigation. It should come as no surprise that a global tracking firm bears the Magellan name; nor is it surprising that the Magellan Roadmate series has a number of easy-to-use, practical features to make navigation easy.

The Magellan Roadmate series consists of several models of handheld GPS devices for the North American continent including the United States. Each one has ease of use through their interactive displays that are so simple to understand, you really don't even need to read the directions! The common features include six million points of interest (POI). With these points, you can click on the icon and the GPS will give you directions, including which exit to take, as well as other helpful information about the locations. POIs include gas stations, hotels, ATMs that are searchable by category, name, and city or nearest to your position.

See below for other shared features. The home icon allows you to set any location to be your home base. QuickSpell is a capability of the Magellan Roadmate GPS system that lets you check spelling while you type, and it quickly and easily searches POIs and addresses for you. SayWhere is a feature that uses text-to-voice technology to give you street names and turn-by-turn instructions to get you to the next stop on your journey. Auto re-route and SmartDetour are two of the greatest features of the Magellan Roadmate. These help you avoid congested traffic due to accidents, road construction, or other factors. Your route will be re-assessed, even as you turn off in other directions to avoid heavy traffic. Auto NightView is a very useful feature that automatically resets the LCD screen settings for brightness, color, and contrast for ease of navigation in low light situations. Address Books come standard on each of the Roadmate GPS systems. You can save information for use on future trips, and avoid having to look up the same POIs over and over again.

There are plenty of other great features available, though they don't come standard on all models. For example, the Roadmate 1430 has a handy tow truck icon that displays your exact whereabouts so tow trucks can locate you easily in an emergency. On the 1200, 1400, and 1430 models, you can take advantage of 2D and 3D screen view options. And, every Magellan Roadmate comes with detailed maps of each North American country, in addition to Puerto Rico and Hawaii. Your position will be located to within 3 meters of your actual location in real time, and the unit's rechargeable batteries last for three hours before needing a recharge. The Magellan Roadmate GPS makes customizable routes a reality, and some units have the ability to load up to twenty locations at once!

Users love the flexibility and grand detail received in using these sleek little compact GPSs, especially since you can take them anywhere! You can also attach it to your windshield or dash with accessories that comes with. There is a volume adjustment so you can hear around noisy situations, and the level will come back down when it becomes quieter. Additional maps are available for download for the UK and European countries, as well. For everyday life, excursions into traffic or your own little epic adventure, the Magellan Roadmate GPS is a fantastic buy!

The Origin Of Auto Naviagation System

By Tingwey

Here is what you should know from the start: The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or setup charges to use GPS.

The satellite Navigation existed long ago than many people may become conscious of, the ideology in SatNav was first experienced before in 1967, however almost 30years after, the NavSat GPS System started working as an army scheme in the mid 1990s. After the military launch, the GPS system was made for civilian application too, however the original cost price of the system was too expensive, and you had to subscribe in order to have it. Those who first benefited from the GPS were pilots, surveyors, who had to evaluate their distance with exactness. Earlier ago, an affordable GPS auto navigation system was impractical for the common car owner.

Over the past couple of years, the cost of installing a GPS auto navigation system has fallen considerably. As an inevitable result of this, more and more people are taking advantage of it in order to make it easier to find out where they are going, plan their journeys, and keep track of where they are.

Do not believe that the GPS auto navigation is only used by those doing long journeys. Whats true here is, even those who spend long hours in their truck, cars, or SUV also enjoy the advantages of the automobile navigation system or any tool of a similar value. Most forecast users like you may think of ones apprehension. This is the type of system that will be most favorable for the type of navigation system you actually need. You have to know the different auto navigation systems that exist and decide which you really need for your project.

On The market today, we can find the following navigation systems. -The stand alone navigation system which provides an excellent and complete mapping utilities. -The Multipurpose Handheld Navigation Devices. This one is a bit inferior to the first since it does not provide all the functions that the first provides. -Laptop/Palm Based systems. This type of system is integrated into your laptop incase you carry it each time you travel.

Next are some tips you can apply in order to use the GPS navigation system and technology during your journey: 1. Start by making a plan of your trip, before you start the engine of your car; make sure you know what destination you are going to. 2. Hold on tracts for Theatres, restaurants or malls. During your journey, you will need to stop somewhere to eat, or to take a nap. Doing these in a theatre, mall or a good restaurant is a great decision.

In the good old day, a simple journey of an hour could end up taking several hours simply because there was no direction take, no fuel points noted or restaurants taken note. The GPS Auto navigation system has come to solve that problem.

The GPS navigation system has made it easy for traveling in the sense that it make s you know where you are, and it can equally help you get the shortest way to you final destination.

Now, whether you are out for work or simply for vacation, traveling was never been this easy as you no longer need that massive atlas or the commercial tour guide and save you not only with fuel but also with time, money, and energy.

Tried and True Virtual Mapping: DDNS

By James G. Pynn

The more information the Internet delivers, it seems, the less we know. To borrow an odd colloquialism, swing a dead cat and watch how few people you hit who have ever heard of a digital domain name system. "A what?" they may be inclined to ask, once you do away with the cat. This naming system is the very firmament of the Internet, as we know it today. It is a heady statement to be sure, but not one without some credence.

Once you would drop a dime in a phone and be connected to whomever you wished to speak to. Now, a digital domain name system, known conventionally as DDNS, has been likened to the phone book of the Internet. That is, you know the name of the site or person you wish to visit or contact, so you naturally type in the desired URL or email address and voila, you are taken to that website. This is the mundane magic of the proliferation of DDNS providers floating in cyberspace.

Consider the rampant madness that would ensue should people be required to memorize websites and emails by means of their numerical IP addresses. These maddening strings of numbers and letters are represented by two related naming conventions, the IPv4 and the IPv6 languages. This means an IP address could be 341.21.183.161, for the IPv4 or 2033:db3:1f60::988:de1:7182:4e8, for the IPv6 convention. Either way, it would be impossible to carry on about the Internet like the virtual surfing freaks we are.

A DDNS service acts like a translator, or better yet, a switchboard operator. You place your call with your keywords or web addresses, and the DDNS operator places the name to the IP address. This may seem like a mildly interesting nugget of knowledge, but should you be marginally interested in doing business online, investing in a reliable DDNS service could be the quintessential difference between success and failure.

A reliable DDNS provider, like a switchboard operator worth her salt, should be able to juggle IP addresses to various URL and domain requests without dropping the figurative call. Should a potential customer type in your business website and he or she is met with a Page Load error that could be a dropped customer and lost wages for you. Make the investment that matters, invest in a reputable DDNS provider.
