5 Ideas That Will Make You Think About Technology

By Daniel Burnap

What is Cell Phone Unlocking?

Most likely, your phone can only work with your current cell phone carrier. If you wanted to switch to another carrier, your phone would not work. Even if you love the phone you have now, you would be forced to buy a new one. Even if you travel to another country, you still won't be able to use another carrier. This is because your phone is locked.

However there is a way around this. Generally, with most types of phones and carriers, there are methods to have your phone unlocked. When your phone is unlocked, you can do things like change your number, change your service provider, or change the account your phone is on.

All cell phones today rely on Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) to function. If your phone is on CDMA, unfortunately, there is no way to unlock it.

It's very simple to determine whether or not your phone uses GSM. Phones operating on GSM all use subscriber identity module (SIM) cards. All of your setting, contacts, and account info are stored on this card. When your phone is unlocked, you can put a SIM card from another carrier in it and your phone will work. Locked phones don't work with other carriers because they have features enabled that match the serial number of the phone with the account information on the SIM card, and if the two do not correspond, then the phone won't work.

You can do a really simple test to see if your phone is unlocked. Step one is find a friend with an unlocked phone. Take the SIM card out of your phone, and put theirs in. You know for sure that your phone is unlocked if they are able to make and receive calls. You know your phone is locked if they are unable to do either of these things.

There are three main reasons for unlocking your phones:

The first reason is to switch to another service provider. Lots of people feel like they're happy with their phone, but not with their current provider. Another reason is that unlocking your phone allows you to travel to different countries and be able to get service with the phone you already own. All you have to do is get a new SIM card. The third common reason that people choose to unlock their phones is because unlocking your phone allows you to add many more features to your phone. Do a simple search online to discover how to unlock your particular phone and you'll find out just how easy and beneficial it can be. What are you waiting for?
